Our HIStory

The story of the Pearl River Baptist Association is a powerful testament to ministers and believers who—unwavering in their faith—labored through hardship and, by the grace of God, prevailed in establishing a vibrant Christian witness across South Mississippi and beyond.

Pioneer Roots (1842)

The seeds of Southern Baptist work in this region were planted in 1842 when William Henry Varnado began his labor in South Mississippi. Joining hands with Calvin Magee, they organized Palestine Baptist Church, laying a spiritual foundation that would nourish generations to come.

Growth and Unification

In the decades that followed, the gospel took deep root throughout the Pearl River region. New congregations emerged to meet the needs of growing communities. Recognizing the biblical call for unity and cooperation, these local churches joined together in various regional associations under several historic names, combining their resources to support church planting, pastoral care, and community outreach.

A New Name, A Shared Mission (1921)

A landmark moment arrived on September 28, 1921, at Bethel Baptist Church. Representatives from churches across the area gathered and officially called to order under a unified name: Pearl River Baptist Association. This milestone marked a new era of strategic fellowship, anchoring the churches together under a shared purpose.

Continuing the Legacy

Over a century later, the family of churches within the Pearl River Baptist Association remains steadfastly committed to the Great Commission. From local community ministry throughout South Mississippi to global mission endeavors reaching the ends of the earth, our legacy lives on in every life transformed by the gospel.
